Functionality and structure of mesogenic systems (liquid crystals)
Liquid crystals are ordered fluids that are of great importance both in living organisms and in information technology. The role of lipid double layers in organic cell membranes and the technical application of liquid crystals in flat panel displays are very well acquainted examples of their appearance. Novel mesophases, supramolecular structures and polymer- or nanoparticle-containing composites with novel, unusual properties pose great challenges for topical research.
