Dr.-Ing. Özlem Özcan, born on the 29th of September 1981, studied chemical engineering in METU (Ankara, Turkey) from 1999-2003  and completed her B. Sc. degree with the graduation project “Catalytic Hydrogen Production from LPG”. Dr. Özcan then obtained the M. Sc. degree at METU (Ankara, Turkey) under the supervision of Prof. Deniz  Üner with the thesis title “Artifcial Photosynthesis: Dye assisted photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide over pure and platinum containing titania” in 2005.

In 2006 she started her Ph. D. study as a SurMat Max Planck Research School scholar at Max Planck Institut für Eisenforschung (Düsseldorf, Germany) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Guido Grundmeier. She completed her Ph.D. study in 2010 with the Thesis titled “Synthesis, characterisation and functionalisation of ZnO nanorods on metals" at the Faculty of Materials Science in Ruhr University (Bochum, Germany).

The research interests of Dr.-Ing. Özcan include nanostructured thin films, surface and interface chemistry, electrochemistry and DFT studies of adsorption organofunctional molecules on oxide surfaces.
