Coating Materials & Polymers
Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Bremser

Research & Development

The research group Coating Materials & Polymers (CMP), headed by Prof. Dr. Bremser, focuses on advanced materials and process science. CMP unifies the fields of classical chemistry and polymer engineering. Major topics include synthesis and functionalization of polymeric materials such as high-performance polymers, nano particles and adhesives.

The research group Biobased & Bioinspired Materials by Dr. Oliver Strube focuses on nanostructuring biological polymers on surfaces by enzyme-moderated autophoresis and bio-based materials in the coating area and biomimetic structures.

As part of the BMBF-funded joint project "BIOPHOB: Biogenic By-Products from Palm Fatty Acid Distillate as Hydrophobizing Synthesis Modules in Acrylate Dispersions for Coating Materials", the Indonesian-German Polymer Research Center (IG-PRC) was established at the Teknologi Bandung (ITB) Institute in Bandung, Indonesia. The IG-PRC is available for joint German-Indonesian research projects.

In the "Microdomes" research project, ILH scientists in the Coatings, & Polymers working group headed by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Bremser are developing a microphase separating hybrid coating with high application potential.

In a new interdisciplinary research project of the Paderborn University the optimization-based development of hybrid materials is being researched. The long-term goal of "HyOpt" is to promote the requirement-oriented lightweight design with various materials. To this end, the scientists are developing a toolbox...

As part of this project, funded by the ERDF and the European Union, foam boards around pipes are being modified in such a way that, in addition to their insulating effect, they can also simultaneously provide increased protection against corrosion. An integrated self-repair mechanism is designed to ensure that when the anti-corrosive pipe casing is damaged, it is closed again and repair mechanisms are started by the release of corrosion-inhibiting agents that restore and ensure the original protection.
