ESI/MALDI mass spectrometry enhanced by ion mobility separation (IMS) and time-of-flight (TOF) detection

Routine mass spectrometric analysis is conducted on a double focusing sector instrument offering electron ionization and chemical ionization. For the analysis of sensitive or high molecular weight compounds a Waters Synapt™ G2 HDMS mass spectrometer was purchased in 2011. This device offers soft ionization techniques, e.g. electrospray ionization (ESI), atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI). Beside the option of conducting MS/MS experiments, the Synapt G2 contains an integrated ion mobility separation cell capable of separating ions according to their charge and their collision cross section. Moreover, the Synapt G2 can be hyphenated to liquid chromatography system (HPLC, SEC). In the MALDI mode imaging experiments are possible as well. The QuanTOF analyzer operates with an outstanding signal resolution, thereby allowing the acquisition of mass spectra in high-definition quality. All these features make the Synapt G2 a suitable tool for challenging applications, e.g. metabolite profiling, proteome research, biomarker identification, screening applications and polymer research.
