About our work

Catalysis, a fundamental green technology, allows the predictable construction of functional molecules. This enables us to contribute to various scientific fields and help adress social challenges.

A key challenge in organic chemistry is the creation and manipulation of functional groups which is a central theme in the Werner group. This is closely linked to the available synthetic methodologies and catalytic systems as well as raw materials. In the latter regard sustainability considerations, including CO₂ utilization, the use of renewable resources, and material recycling, are of paramount importance to our research. Our research centers on the design of new catalysts and synthetic methods for the creation of specific molecular structures.

Our work contributes significantly to the synthesis of essential organic molecules, such as heterocyclic and biologically active compounds, while striving to make these processes more environmentally sustainable. Different aspects such as selectivity, reactivity, reaction regulation and valorization of abundant resources inspire us to develop streamlined procedures applicable in both synthetic chemistry and process development.
